Mary Evans
Mike DeSa Memorial Scholarship Recipient
Mary Evans has been an active participant in Civic Arts Education classes and was a recipient, this past summer, of a Mike DeSa Memorial Scholarship provided by the Friends Foundation and given to a student who exemplifies leadership skills. This is the second year that she has attended the five-week Arts, Adventures and Academics (AAA) summer program, held at Walnut Creek Intermediate. This year Mary took cooking, creative dancing, and theater – her favorite because they got to put on a play.
Currently a fifth grader at Indian Valley School in Walnut Creek, Mary is a budding athlete and writer, her mother tells us. Last year she studied both Hip-Hop dance and Ballet through Civic Arts and played basketball, baseball, flag football at school. She also loves to read and when not turning cartwheels and practicing handstands in her garden (Mom’s words), she is usually found thoroughly engrossed in a book. Mary loves to collect books, buying most of them used from the Friends of the Walnut Creek Library program or from the Scholastic Book Sales when they come to her school. Obviously, this has contributed to her great interest in writing. In addition to all this, Mary is active in church, attending a youth group, called Club 56 at Walnut Creek Presbyterian for fifth and sixth graders, as well as an evening Bible-based girls group that runs throughout the school year at North Creek Church in Walnut Creek.
Mary was honored as the DeSa Memorial Scholarship recipient at an AAA Open House in late July, at the close of the five-week program.
The Arts, Adventures & Academics (AAA) summer program is a unique, five-week enrichment program providing students with opportunities for exploration, creativity and hands-on learning during the summer months. Dependent upon the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation, AAA was able to award 20 scholarships averaging $400 each. Unfortunately, registration fees alone are not sufficient to guarantee the continued success of the program. A contribution can help sponsor one deserving child. Please consider a tax-deductible donation today. Make your check payable to the Friends of CAE Foundation and send to the Friends Foundation, P. O. Box 8039, Walnut Creek, CA 94596. More information or to pay via credit card, call the Friends office on (925) 939-2787.
